MC WD formed in São Paulo in 2003 as a group of four women: Josiane, Nega Queen, Bebel, and Rosana. The name stands for Mulheres de Determinação, or Women of Determination. They came together to make music that spoke about the experiences of women in their communities.
Their debut album 'Na Batida dos Nossos Corações' came out in 2004 and included the track 'Alô Mãe'. The song became something of an anthem, connecting with listeners through its direct address to mothers. The group's music mixed rap with funk and samba rhythms.
Later albums like 'Revolução Feminina' and 'Sobreviventes' continued in a similar vein, with lyrics that touched on social issues. As a female rap group in Brazil, they faced some dismissive attitudes early on, but kept working. Their music found an audience that appreciated its straightforward approach to everyday struggles.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
