Scott McKenzie was born Philip Wallach Blondheim III in Jacksonville, Florida. He started performing in Greenwich Village folk clubs before adopting his stage name. His debut album 'The Voice of Scott McKenzie' came out in 1967.

In 1968, John Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas gave him the lyrics to 'San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair).' McKenzie's recording of the song reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100. It became closely associated with the San Francisco hippie scene of that time.

After that hit, McKenzie released other albums including 'Stained Glass Morning' in 1968 and 'The End of McKenzie's World' in 1970. His catalog includes songs like 'Don't Make Promises' and 'Look In Your Eyes.'
