MDclã formed in 1998 as a Portuguese band led by Carlos "Capicua" Ferreira on vocals and lyrics. Other members included Diogo "Toupeira" Santos on bass, João "Magrão" Brandão on drums, Vasco "Emílio" Silva on keyboards, and Luís "Fuse" Ferreira on guitar. They released their first album, O Esplendor da Erva, in 2000 and put out records fairly regularly through 2020's Por Este Rio Acima.
Their 2010 song "Idéias Além" drew attention for lyrics that touched on revolution and social change. The track appears on their album Pin Ups from that year.
MDclã's music often dealt with social and political themes, which sometimes put them at odds with more traditional listeners.
