Meir Banai

Meir Banai was an Israeli singer-songwriter born in 1963 who grew up in Netanya. He joined an Israeli military band in 1982, which is where his musical path began to take shape. His debut solo album 'Shir Shel Shafshaf' came out in 1988, with the title track becoming particularly well-known.

Songs like 'Shiro Shel Shafshaf' and 'Kama Ahava' reflect the kind of introspective writing that connected with listeners. His music had a straightforward, melodic quality that didn't rely on elaborate production. Banai's younger brother Ehud also became a musician, suggesting something about the family's artistic environment.

In 2005, Banai was arrested for drug possession and served prison time. He returned to performing in 2008 with a series of concerts that were noted for their directness. He died in 2013.
