MEMO formed in Santiago in 1984 with Claudio Narea on vocals, Gonzalo Yáñez on guitar, Jorge Campos on bass, and Rodrigo Salinas on drums. They were part of the Chilean punk scene that developed during the 1980s, a period marked by political repression. Their early albums like 'La Edad de Oro' and 'El Punk de Ayer' came out in quick succession in 1985 and 1986.
Their song 'Mientras Sigan, Seguiremos' reflects the straightforward, urgent quality of their music. Other tracks like 'Huele a Podrido' and 'Monarkía S.A.' carried that same direct energy. The band faced harassment from authorities for their outspoken lyrics, which resonated with a youth audience living under censorship.
MEMO's output was prolific during those years, with 'Upa!' arriving in 1987. Narea's lyrics and Yáñez's guitar work defined their sound, raw but with a melodic pull that kept it from being just noise. They made music that felt necessary at the time, not designed for posterity.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
