Memphis formed in Nashville in the early 2000s around brothers Jake and Josh McMahan, with Jake on vocals and guitar and Josh on bass. They were joined by guitarist Dan Dixon, drummer Jonathon Dunn, and keyboardist Matt Marovich. Their debut album 'The Way We Are' came out in 2004.
That album included 'Underground,' which became something of an anthem for them. They followed with other albums like 'Beneath the Skin.' Their songs sometimes touched on social themes, as with 'Everybody Wants to be Black on a Saturday Night' and 'Make Me Stronger.'
They worked in a mix of Southern rock, blues, and soul. Some critics found them derivative, but they kept at it with their own blend of sounds.
