Men at Work formed in Melbourne in 1979 with Colin Hay on vocals and guitar, Ron Strykert on guitar, Greg Ham on flute and saxophone, John Rees on bass, and Jerry Speiser on drums. They signed with EMI in 1981 and put out their first album, 'Business as Usual.' The single 'Down Under' from that record went to number one in several countries, helped by its didgeridoo intro and Hay's dry delivery about Australian identity.

After 'Down Under,' the band released 'Cargo' and later albums like 'Two Hearts' and 'Some People's Lives.' Songs such as 'Dr. Heckyll & Mr. Jive' and 'Helpless Automaton' kept their sound in rotation, mixing new wave pop with Ham's flute and sax lines.

Men at Work faced a plagiarism claim over the flute riff in 'Down Under,' which they settled out of court. The lineup shifted over time, with Greg Ham eventually leaving. They're remembered for a handful of sharply written pop songs that captured a particular moment, rather than for a long catalog or a dramatic story.
