Menomena formed in Portland, Oregon in the early 2000s as a trio with Brent Knopf on vocals, guitar and electronics, Justin Harris on drums, vocals and electronics, and Danny Seim on bass, vocals and keyboards. They started out calling themselves 'the menomena' and put out their first album 'I Am the Fun Blame Monster' in 2003.
Their 2004 single 'Air Aid' got them some attention with its layered electronics and drifting vocals. They followed it with albums like 'Friend and Foe' in 2007 and 'Mines' in 2010, working in a space between indie rock and more atmospheric electronic textures. Songs like 'Rotten Hell' and 'Baton' show how they could build something rhythmic and a little unsettled from those pieces.
They were never an easy band to pin down, and that was part of the point. Their music didn't settle into one groove for too long, and the lyrics often leaned toward the interior. It was the kind of thing that either clicked with you or didn't, and they seemed fine with that.
