Mental As Anything formed in 1976 with Andrew "Greedy" Smith on vocals, Martin Plaza on guitar and vocals, Peter O'Doherty on drums, Reg Mombassa on guitar, and Chris O'Connor on bass. They came up through the Australian pub rock circuit, mixing rock with reggae and pop touches and a sense of humor.
Their third album, 1984's "Espresso Bongo," gave them their biggest hit with "Live It Up." The song's upbeat, celebratory feel connected with audiences and became a staple of their set. Other songs like "Apocalypso" and "Big Wheel" showed their range.
Andrew Smith left the band in 1985 to go solo, but the others kept going. They were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2009.
