Mercyful Fate

Mercyful Fate formed in 1981 around guitarist Hank Shermann and vocalist King Diamond. Their debut album 'Melissa' arrived in 1983, establishing their sound with tracks like 'Evil' and 'Come To The Sabbath' that blended theatrical heavy metal with occult themes. The band's visual presentation often included elaborate stage sets with coffins and graveyard imagery, which drew attention alongside their music.

King Diamond's distinctive vocal style, ranging from piercing highs to guttural lows, became a signature element. Songs like 'The Oath' and 'Into The Coven' showcased the band's ability to weave complex guitar work with dark lyrical narratives. Their second album 'Don't Break the Oath' followed in 1984, continuing their exploration of macabre subject matter.

While often associated with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement, Mercyful Fate developed a sound that felt distinct from many of their contemporaries. The lineup included Michael Denner on guitar, Timi Hansen on bass, and Kim Ruzz on drums during their early period. Their influence would later be cited by various metal bands, though their own catalog remains anchored in those first few albums.

After a period of inactivity, the band returned in the 1990s with albums like 'In the Shadows' and 'Time,' but it's the early material that defines their place in metal history. The song 'Melissa' remains a touchstone, a slower, more melodic piece that demonstrated their range beyond pure aggression.
