MercyMe formed in Greenville, Texas in 1994 with Bart Millard on vocals, Jim Bryson on guitar, Mike Scheuchzer on acoustic guitar, Nathan Cochran on bass, and Robby Shaffer on drums. Their early years were lean, with lineup changes and financial struggles, but they kept at it. In 1999, they released 'I Can Only Imagine,' a song that connected with listeners in a way that took them from playing small shows to something much larger.

That song's success came from its straightforward approach, Millard's plainspoken delivery over a simple piano line that builds to a big chorus. It wasn't trying to be clever, just direct. The band followed it with albums like 'Almost There' in 2001 and 'Undone' in 2004, sticking to that same template of accessible, melody-driven songs about faith and doubt. Later tracks like 'Even If' and 'Grace Got You' work in the same vein, built around singable hooks and lyrics that don't shy away from everyday struggles.

The lineup has shifted over time. Bryson left in 2010, and Cochran departed in 2019. Through those changes, the core of Millard, Scheuchzer, and Shaffer has held steady, keeping the sound consistent.
