Background notes

Archive material and source history

Merembe formed in Havana in 1972, led by conductor and vocalist José Luis Cortés. They came together as a group of musicians interested in traditional Cuban rhythms. Their self-titled debut album arrived in 1979, featuring the track "Desesperado," which became widely known.

Their music drew from Cuban styles like son, guaracha, and cha-cha-chá, while also incorporating jazz and rock elements. The band's lineup changed at times, but Cortés remained central. Pianist Emilio Vega, bassist Juan Formell, and vocalist Osvaldo Rodriguez were among those who played with the group.

In the early 1980s, Merembe encountered government restrictions in Cuba related to their lyrics and musical approach. They continued performing despite these pressures.
