Archive material and source history
Meri Pichelli formed in Mumbai in the early 1990s with singer Sameer Khan, guitarist Ashok Illavale, bassist Rajeev Bhalla, and drummer Kaustubh Mahajan. They started playing underground gigs with an unconventional sound that didn't fit what mainstream Indian music favored at the time.
Their 1997 debut album 'Cai Na Real' changed things. The title track became an instant sensation with its raw lyrics about urban poverty, though it also drew criticism for what some called obscenity.
After that breakthrough, they kept releasing albums through the early 2000s including 'Sarhad' in 1999, 'Chal Chala Chal' in 2002, and 'Aazma' in 2005. Their music maintained that same gritty quality that first got them attention, even as their sound evolved over those years.
