Mestre Cupijó

Mestre Cupijó formed in 1987 in Santana do Uarini, a small town in the Amazon region. The founding members were José Bonifácio and Antônio Carlos, who started with limited resources but managed to put together their first instruments.

Their song 'Caboclinha do Igapó' became their most recognized work, a ballad that draws on Amazonian imagery and traditional sounds. It's the track people tend to remember when they think of the group.

Over time, other musicians joined the lineup, though the core of their music remained connected to the Amazon's indigenous melodies and local rhythms. They've recorded more than a dozen albums, mostly staying within that regional folk tradition rather than chasing broader trends.
