Mestre Garrote formed in 1976, founded by Zé Moraes, a former political prisoner. The band took its name from an abolitionist leader, which set the tone for much of their work. Their debut album came out in 1978 and included the song "Dor de Escravo," a track that became closely associated with them.
They kept playing in underground venues. Over time, the group had a changing lineup that included guitarist Vitor Ramil and bassist Luiz Marenco alongside Moraes.
They released several albums through the 1980s and early 1990s, like "Samba pra Lua" in 1980 and "Força e Raça" in 1992.
