Archive material and source history

Mestre Magu was born Manoel Magalhaes Aguiar in Salvador, Bahia. He came up in the samba-reggae scene there, eventually joining the group Samba Bom in the late 1960s. It was during this time he wrote 'Arrastão,' a song about the fishermen in his hometown that became his most well-known work.

His music often dealt with social and political themes, which sometimes brought him into conflict with authorities. In 1976, he was arrested and imprisoned, reportedly over the content of his songs. After his release, he spent some time outside Brazil.

He kept recording through the decades, putting out albums like 'Capoeira Angola' in 1980 and 'Salve Bahia' in 1998. Other songs in his catalog include 'Caravela' and 'Muros e Grades.'
