Mestre Marçal formed in 1974 in Santo Amaro, São Paulo, with Antonio Carlos Marçal on vocals, Mário "Mamão" Campos on bass, and José "Zé" Rodrix on drums. In 1976, they were jailed for three months after playing at the University of São Paulo.
Their 1975 song "Liberdade, Liberdade! Abra As Asas Sobre Nós" became an anthem of resistance during those years. The band released four albums between 1975 and 1980, including "Liberdade, Liberdade!" and "Por Quem os Sinos Dobram." Other songs like "Peço a Deus" and "Facho de Esperança" carried similar political themes.
Their music mixed samba with rock elements, but it was the directness of their message that connected with audiences. They didn't perform much after the early 1980s, but that 1975 freedom song still surfaces at protests and political gatherings in Brazil.
