Miami Metro came out of Miami in the early 1980s, led by frontman Edward "Eddie" Mendez. Their song "Edward" caught on quickly, built around a simple, catchy melody and Mendez's direct lyrics. They played live shows that were known for being loud and unpolished, which drew a specific crowd in those early years.
Things got complicated as they went along. Mendez wrote lyrics that some found provocative, and their album "The Savage Messiah" stirred up complaints from certain groups. In 1989, a former manager sued them over song rights, a legal fight that took up time and money. Mendez also had personal issues, including an arrest for drug possession in 1992 that led to canceled shows.
The band went quiet for a while after that. They came back together in 2005 for a tour and a greatest hits collection, but it didn't last. By 2007, they were done. People still listen to songs like "Toda Noite Contigo" and "Vie," but mostly as a piece of that particular Miami moment from decades ago.
