Archive material and source history
Michael Hutchence was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1960. In the late 1970s, he joined his brother Andrew Farriss and three other musicians to form INXS. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1980, followed by records like The Swing in 1984 and Kick in 1987. Kick produced hits like Need You Tonight and Devil Inside, and Hutchence's voice and stage presence became central to the band's appeal.
In 1993, he recorded Slide Away with Bono, a ballad that reflected on a difficult relationship. That song, along with others like A Straight Line and Breathe from his solo work, showed a more introspective side. He died in 1997.
