Michael Nyman

Michael Nyman started writing music in the late 1960s, drawing from the experimental work of composers like John Cage and Steve Reich. His early pieces used repetitive patterns and unusual instrumentation, which set him apart from more traditional classical approaches.

In 1993, his music for Jane Campion's film 'The Piano' brought him wider recognition. The main theme from that score became one of his best-known pieces. He also worked with director Peter Greenaway on films including 'Drowning by Numbers' and 'A Zed & Two Noughts'.

His catalog includes songs like 'If' and 'Rochester's Farewell', and spans more than forty years of composition. Some critics have questioned his use of repetition, but he's continued working in his own style throughout.
