Background notes

Archive material and source history

Microfônicos formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1967 with Mário Sério on vocals and guitar, Marcos Valle also on vocals and guitar, Carlos Esteves on bass, Ronaldo Bôscoli on drums, and Roberto Quaresma on organ. Their sound mixed samba, bossa nova, and rock 'n' roll.

Their 1968 single "Ao Emprego" became a hit with its commentary on unemployment and working-class struggles. The band released two studio albums: "Microfônicos" in 1969 and "Microfônicos 2" in 1970. Other songs like "Carta da Revolução" and "Sociedade Perdida?" continued their socially conscious approach.

Microfônicos disbanded in 1971. Their politically charged lyrics sometimes drew criticism, and their live shows could be uneven due to heavy improvisation.
