Archive material and source history

Middle of the Road formed in Scotland in 1970, with Sally Carr's vocals at the front. They had trouble getting a record deal at first, playing pubs and clubs around Glasgow. Things changed in 1971 when 'Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep' came out and went to number one in several countries.

That same year they released 'Soley Soley,' which became their best-known song. They followed it with tracks like 'Sacramento' and 'Love Sweet Love.' The band's sound was straightforward pop with harmonies, built around Carr's voice and simple, catchy arrangements.

They kept recording through the mid-1970s, with Ian Campbell on guitar, Eric McCredie on bass, and Ken Andrew on drums. After a few years of regular releases, they gradually became less active, though some of those early hits have stuck around on oldies radio.
