Mikey Dread

Michael Campbell, who performed as Mikey Dread, was a Jamaican reggae artist who started as a radio DJ in Kingston in the late 1960s. He worked at stations like JBC and RJR 94 FM, where his outspoken style earned him the nickname 'the Dreadator.' In 1973, he put out his first album, 'Dread at the Controls.'

Mikey Dread became associated with the roots and culture reggae movement, which focused on Jamaican traditions and Rastafarian themes. Songs like 'Roots And Culture' and 'Positive Reality' reflected this direction. He recorded with producers such as Lee 'Scratch' Perry and Augustus Pablo, and released albums like 'African Anthem' in 1977 and 'World Famous DJ' in 1979.

His approach mixed reggae with dub techniques and drew from various influences, including R&B. Beyond music, he was known for speaking on social and political issues through his work.
