Mikhail Lermontov

Mikhail Lermontov is a Russian rock band that formed in Moscow around 2002. They took their name from the 19th-century poet Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov and drew from traditional Cossack folk songs for some of their material. The original lineup included Alexei Fedorov on vocals and guitar, Alexander Bondarenko on bass, and Vladimir Filippov on drums, with Fedorov staying with the band through various changes.

Their 2005 album "Cossack Lullaby" gave them their most recognizable song, a haunting rock adaptation of the traditional lullaby. The band released two more albums, "The Distant Land" in 2007 and "Field of Dreams" in 2010, working in a space between alternative rock and folk influences.

Some listeners questioned how authentically they handled traditional material, and their lyrics occasionally drew different political readings. But their version of "Cossack Lullaby" found an audience and became associated with contemporary Cossack culture in Russia.
