Archive material and source history
Roger Miller was born in Oklahoma in 1936 and started playing guitar young. He moved to California to pursue music, and in the early 1960s signed with Smash Records. That's when songs like 'Chug-A-Lug' and 'King Of The Road' started appearing.
'King Of The Road' became his signature tune, but he had other hits with that same clever, slightly off-kilter humor. 'Do Wacka Do' and 'England Swings' showed his knack for wordplay and catchy, simple melodies that didn't sound quite like anyone else's country music at the time.
He worked with people like Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson, and his backing band included musicians such as Hal Blaine. Miller kept recording through the 1960s with albums like 'The Return of Roger Miller' and 'You Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd.'
