Ministros do Riso started in Luanda in 1989, originally calling themselves Ngola Ritmos. They played local clubs and events, working with basic equipment. In 1999, their single "Tchutchuá" caught on widely in Angola, its melody and lyrics about love and social issues connecting with listeners.
Some critics at the time argued the band's songs promoted drinking or promiscuity, but that didn't slow their reach. They put out albums like "Planeta Riso" in 1994 and "Festa na Aldeia" in 2000. Brazilian singer Ivete Sangalo joined them on a track called "Festa."
The early group included Waldemar Bastos on vocals, with Nelo Paim and Miguel Buila on guitar, Joãozinho Morgado on bass, and Chico Viegas on drums. Members changed over time, but their mix of Angolan rhythms and newer sounds kept people dancing.
