Misanthrope formed in London in the early 2000s around vocalist Tony Forde. Their name comes from the Greek term for someone who distrusts humanity, which gives a sense of their outlook. The band's sound pulls from death metal, black metal, and industrial elements, with Forde's guttural vocals and relentless instrumentation creating a heavy, dark atmosphere.

Their song 'Ixion' draws from the Greek myth of a king condemned to eternal punishment on a fiery wheel. Other tracks like '1666... Theatre Bizarre' and '1857' continue this thematic approach to historical and mythological darkness. The band developed a cult following in the underground metal scene for their uncompromising approach.

Misanthrope faced various controversies over their lyrics and performances, with some critics accusing them of glorifying nihilism. They weathered legal issues and canceled tours while maintaining their artistic direction. The band's work remains defined by this persistent, dark vision rather than any commercial breakthrough.
