Mizpa came together in Lima in the late 1990s, formed by siblings Manuel and Freddy Zevallos and their cousins César and Eduardo. They drew from Andean folk traditions, and in 2002, a national music competition led to a record deal. Their debut album 'Encuentro' followed.
Their song 'Allpa Yuraq' came out in 2005 and became widely known in Peru. The track's lyrics about the landscape and people connected with listeners, and it remains their most recognized work. Mizpa toured internationally after that, though some critics felt their sound became more commercial over time.
