Moby Dick formed in Spain in 1969 with Luis Estrada on vocals, Pedro Ruy-Blas on guitar, Jorge Alfaya on bass, and Manolo Gallego on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1971, and the title track became a hit. They followed it with Moby Dick II in 1972 and Moby Dick III in 1974.
Their song "Sin Una Ilusión" became particularly well-known. The band kept recording through the late 1970s with albums like No Hay Tregua in 1976 and Despues De La Tormenta in 1978, finishing the decade with Rosa de los Vientos in 1980.
