Mohammed Rafi was born in 1924 in Kotla Sultan Singh, Punjab. He started as a qawwal, influenced by vocalist Ustad Chand Khan, before making his Bollywood debut in 1944 with the song "Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki" for the film "Gaon Ki Gori." His voice quickly became familiar in Indian cinema.
Rafi worked with many of the era's composers and lyricists, recording songs for films like "Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam" in 1962, "Junglee" in 1961, and "Kashmir Ki Kali" in 1964. You can hear his range in tracks like "Jaan Pehechan Ho" and "Khuda Bhi Aasmaan Se."
He recorded a vast number of songs, reportedly over 25,000 in various languages. His voice had a warmth that suited both romantic numbers and more spirited pieces, keeping him in demand through the 1960s and beyond.
