Mom Jeans

Mom Jeans formed in Berkeley around 2014, when Eric Butler and Sam Kless started writing songs together after meeting at a house party. They eventually became a quartet with Austin Carango on drums and Hayden Coplen on guitar. In those early days, they played DIY gigs and worked through the usual small-band struggles with practice spaces and live sound.

Their first album 'Best Buds' came out in 2016, followed by 'Puppy Love' in 2018. Songs like 'Death Cup' and 'Edward 40 Hands' have that mix of jangly guitar lines and plainspoken lyrics about everyday anxieties that became their thing. They're an emo-punk band, but the sound leans more toward the conversational side of that tradition.

There was some noise in 2019 about a song on their album 'Beta Male Fairytale' sounding similar to another band's work, which they addressed. Mostly though, they've kept making the kind of music their fans expect, direct, a little messy, and grounded in the specifics of being young and figuring things out.
