Momoe Yamaguchi

Momoe Yamaguchi was a Japanese pop singer who became a major figure in the 1970s. She started in the girl group The Candies before going solo. Her 1977 debut single 'Cosmos' was a huge hit, selling over a million copies and earning her the nickname 'The Goddess of Cosmos.' Songs like 'Ii Hi Tabidachi' and 'Aizenbashi' from her extensive catalog of over 30 studio albums became anthems for a generation.

Her career was relatively brief but intensely popular. She collaborated with musicians like Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yumi Matsutoya, which showed a range beyond her initial idol image. In 1980, her marriage to actor Tomokazu Miura caused a significant stir among fans. Two years later, in 1982, they both retired from the entertainment industry, which was a major cultural event in Japan at the time.

Her music, including tracks like 'Playback Part 2' and 'Aoi Kajitsu,' remains well-known. The straightforward appeal of her voice and the clean production of her records defined a certain sound in Japanese pop during that era.
