Monica Zetterlund was born in Hagfors in 1937 and started performing in local talent competitions and radio shows. In the mid-1950s, she joined Bill Berg's Quartet, a Swedish jazz ensemble, and her recording of "Sakta vi gå genom stan" became a national hit in 1958.

She performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland in 1960 and worked with Quincy Jones in 1964. Her songs include "I'll Take Romance" and "En Gång I Stockholm."

In 1971, she was in a serious car accident that led to an extended break from performing. She returned to the stage in the 1980s with more focus on Swedish folk music.
