Montrose formed in 1973 around guitarist Ronnie Montrose, who had previously played with Van Morrison and Edgar Winter. Their self-titled debut album that same year featured bassist Bill Church and drummer Denny Carmassi. The record included 'Bad Motor Scooter,' a track built around a raucous guitar riff that became something of a calling card for the band.
They released three more studio albums through 1976: 'Paper Money,' 'Warner Bros. Presents Montrose!,' and 'Jump on It.' Songs like 'Rock Candy' and 'Space Station #5' showed their range within a hard rock framework. The lineup shifted over those years, with Church and Carmassi departing after 1975.
Ronnie Montrose's guitar work remained the focal point throughout the band's initial run. He died in 2012.
