A founder of Novos Baianos who later shaped axé music with songs like "Sintonia".
For a quick sense of his range, try "Alto Falante" for that axé pop energy, or "Samba da Bahia de Todos Os Santos" for the rootsier side.
He helped define a whole era of Brazilian music, first with Novos Baianos hits like "Preta Pretinha" in the psychedelic late '60s, then by blending Afro-Brazilian rhythms into pop as a solo artist. Songs like "Alto Falante" and "Sintonia" became axé staples, and his sound drew directly from the samba and candomblé of Bahia street festivals.
He started in Novos Baianos, mixing rock and samba on records until 1975. After going solo, he released over 30 albums, including "Moraes Moreira" in 1975 and "Lá Vem o Brasil Descendo a Ladeira" in 1982, helping shape axé music.
