Moritz formed in 1986 with Valery Leontiev as frontman. The band included guitarist Alexander Kuzmin, bassist Alexander Dubov, keyboardist Alexander Makarov, and drummer Alexander Shishkin. Their name came from the German composer Moritz Moszkowski.
Their 1987 song 'Back In The URSS' became a breakout hit. The music video showed Leontiev in a suit with the band performing on the Kremlin Towers. They also recorded songs like 'Celebration' and 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me'.
Moritz mixed Russian folk elements with pop and rock. Soviet authorities initially viewed them with suspicion due to their unconventional approach.
