Mortiis

Mortiis is the project of Norwegian musician Håvard Ellefsen, who started making music in the early 1990s after being part of Norway's black metal scene. His first album, 'The Song of a Long Forgotten Ghost,' came out in 1994 and set the tone for what followed, layered synths, atmospheric guitars, and vocals that drift through the mix rather than dominate it. Later records like 'Crypt of the Ages' and 'The Stargate' kept exploring that same shadowy, textured territory.

Over time, Mortiis shifted from a solo endeavor to something closer to a band, with keyboardist and vocalist Marianne Semb becoming a steady presence. The project's sound has drawn collaborators from different corners of heavy and electronic music, including Chris Vrenna from Nine Inch Nails and guitarist Andy LaRocque. Songs like 'Demons Are Back' and 'Parasite God' reflect that blend of industrial weight and melodic gloom.

Ellefsen has kept Mortiis going for decades without much concern for fitting into one genre or scene. The music doesn't really belong to black metal or pure darkwave, it's its own thing, built on slow-burning arrangements and a consistent, almost stubborn mood. If you listen to 'Closer To The End' or 'Across The World Of Wonders,' you hear that same patient, enveloping quality that has defined the project from the start.
