Background notes

Archive material and source history

Mourning formed in Montreal in 2000, with Bruno Pelletier on vocals and guitar, Martin Blain on bass, and Frédéric Cloutier on drums. They put out their self-titled debut album in 2005 on their own label. A few years later, in 2008, they released 'The Illusion of Time,' which got some attention in the underground doom metal circles.

Pelletier has been the constant through various lineup changes. After Blain and Cloutier left in 2012, Patrick Levac joined on guitar and Simon Lampron on drums. They've kept putting out records, including 'Haeresis' in 2014, 'Sentient' in 2018, and a 2022 album that features the song 'Entrance Of Darkness.'

Their music is heavy and slow, with Pelletier's vocals sitting low in the mix. Songs like 'Lord of The Night' give you a sense of their sound, long, drawn-out riffs and a generally bleak atmosphere. They've stayed in that lane for over twenty years now, working mostly from Montreal.
