Mousikê came out of Brazil in the 1970s, a time when the country's politics were tense. Their song "Meu Deus, Meu Deus! Está Extinta a Escravidão?" questioned whether slavery had truly ended, and it became a kind of anthem for people still dealing with that history.
They put out their first album, Solitude, in 1975, which had that song on it. Later records like Acorda, Brasil in 1978 and Canções de Liberdade in 1985 kept up with political themes. The group included Edu Lobo, Marcus Vinicius, Aldir Blanc, and Ivan Lins.
