Editor's note

Mucc, the Japanese rock band that kept moving forward

Formed in 1997, they weathered lineup changes and evolved from straightforward rock toward more experimental territory.

For a sense of where they landed later on, try 'Watashi Wa Nanimo Shiranai Furi Shiteite Ageru Wa'. 'Mother' from 2002 gives you the earlier, more direct side.

They've been at it since the late '90s, and their 2002 single 'Mother' is still one of their most recognizable songs. The fact that they kept recording and touring after their bassist left in 2009 says something about their persistence. You can hear that forward motion in songs like 'Watashi Wa Nanimo Shiranai Furi Shiteite Ageru Wa' and 'Aoi Mori'.

They started with a self-titled debut in 1999 and followed it with 'Aishuu' in 2002. After bassist Yukke's arrest and departure in 2009, vocalist Tatsurou handled bass for a while, and their sound gradually became more experimental.

Archive material and source history

Mucc formed in 1997 with Tatsurou on vocals, Miya on guitar, Yukke on bass, and SATOchi on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1999, and they followed it with 'Aishuu' in 2002. That album's single 'Mother' became one of their best-known songs.

In 2009, bassist Yukke was arrested for drug possession and left the band. Tatsurou handled bass duties for a while after that. The group kept working, and their sound shifted toward something more experimental in the years that followed.
