Muendas de Pernambuco was a Brazilian band from the Northeast region, with a name that translates to "Mansions of Pernambuco." Their music mixed rock, hip-hop, and traditional Brazilian rhythms, often with cryptic lyrics about love and loss. The song "Sou viajado (meia luz e meia mente)" became something of an anthem for them, though its references to altered states drew some criticism at the time.
Chico Science was the band's vocalist and lyricist, with other members including Nara Gil on backing vocals and percussion, Gilmar Bola Sete on drums, DJ Dolores on turntables and samples, and Jorge Du Peixe on bass. They released three studio albums in the 1990s: "Da Lama ao Caos" in 1994, "Afrociberdelia" in 1996, and "Retransmissor" in 1997.
Chico Science died in a car accident in 1997, which effectively ended the band's run. Other songs like "A Bala," "Beija flor," and "Desconfiança" show the range of their work, from more direct tracks to moodier, introspective pieces.
