The Muffs formed in Los Angeles in 1991 as a trio with Kim Shattuck on vocals and guitar, Melanie Vammen on bass, and Ronnie Barnett on drums. Their self-titled debut came out in 1993 and included their version of 'Kids In America,' which got some alternative radio play. They put out three more albums over the next decade: 'Blonder and Blonder' in 1995, 'Happy Birthday to Me' in 1997, and 'Hamburger' in 2004.
Shattuck's voice and guitar gave the band its center, with songs like 'Sad Tomorrow' and 'Blow Your Mind' mixing pop hooks with a rougher punk energy. The lineup shifted over time, Vammen left in 1999, replaced by Rhonda Smart, and Barnett departed in 2002, with Roy McDonald taking over on drums. The band went on hiatus in 2013.
They played some reunion shows in 2019 before Shattuck died that same year.
