Mungo Jerry

Mungo Jerry formed in 1970 around Ray Dorset, a self-taught musician from Slough, England. He was joined by Paul King on bass, Colin Earl on drums, and Mike Cole on guitar. Their debut single that year, 'In the Summertime,' became a massive international hit, topping charts worldwide and defining their early sound.

That self-titled 1970 debut album included follow-up singles like 'Baby Jump' and 'Lady Rose.' The band's music drew from rhythm and blues and Jamaican reggae, creating an upbeat, skiffle-influenced style that stood out from much of the British rock scene at the time.

Dorset remained the group's primary songwriter and vocalist through various lineup changes. The name 'Mungo Jerry' itself became a point of discussion, as 'mungo' was British slang that could refer to black people, though the band maintained it came from a T.S. Eliot poem. They continued recording through the early 1970s with albums like 'Electronically Tested' in 1971 and 'Long Legged Woman Dressed in Black' in 1973.
