Müslüm Gürses was born Ahmet Müslüm Gürses in 1953 in a Turkish village. He started out singing on the streets with a bağlama, a traditional string instrument, before being discovered by producer Fazıl Say in 1975. That led to his debut album 'Arabesk', which established him as a popular singer.
His music fell into the arabesque category, a Turkish pop subgenre known for melancholy themes and emotional intensity. Songs like 'Tutamıyorum Zamanı' dealt with love and loss in a raw, direct way that connected with listeners but also drew some criticism for being too explicit.
Gürses had a difficult personal life marked by addiction and mental health struggles. In 1979, his lover Muhterem Nur was murdered, an event that stayed with him. He kept performing and recording until his death in 2003, with his 1999 album 'Tutamıyorum Zamanı' becoming one of his notable later releases.
