Mutya Buena first came to attention as a founding member of the British girl group Sugababes, where her vocals helped shape early hits like 'Overload' and 'Hole in the Head.' After leaving the group, she began working on solo material that leaned into more personal territory.

Her debut single 'Real Girl' arrived in 2007 and became a UK number one, establishing her outside the group context. The song's straightforward emotional delivery connected with listeners, and it remains her best-known solo track. She followed it with the album of the same name later that year.

Buena has continued to release music intermittently, putting out the album 'Nightly Horrors' in 2019. Her work tends to favor direct, soul-inflected pop, with songs like 'Breakdown Motel' and 'Addiction' reflecting that approach.
