Editor's note

MXM's brief, bright run of late-2000s R&B

A short-lived duo that left a handful of sharp, yearning pop-R&B songs.

If you're going to listen to one MXM song, make it 'Checkmate'. For something softer, 'Perfectly Perfect' holds up.

MXM's songs like 'Checkmate' and 'Perfectly Perfect' capture a specific late-2000s R&B mood, smooth, earnest, and a little slick. They didn't stick around long, but those tracks still pop up in playlists and fan discussions. It's the kind of catalog that feels like a time capsule from a particular moment in pop radio.

The duo emerged in the late 2000s with songs like 'Rush on You' and 'Naturally Curly'. They released a small batch of tracks before fading from view, leaving about two dozen songs in their wake.

MXM formed as a South Korean boy band after appearing on the survival show 'Produce 101.' Their debut EP 'Brand New' came out in September 2017, followed by a second EP called 'Another Level' in February 2018. That title track became one of their better-known songs, along with 'Naturally Curly' and 'Rush on You.'

In 2019, member Choi Jun-hong left the group for health reasons, and MXM continued as a duo. They kept releasing music, including songs like 'Gone Cold' and 'Unripe Apple.' In 2020, there was some talk about similarities between 'Gone Cold' and another artist's work, though MXM denied any plagiarism.

They put out 'No More' in 2021 and their first full-length album 'More Than Ever' in 2022. The group's catalog includes tracks like 'Hoping That You'd Love Me' and 'Perfectly Perfect,' which show their range from upbeat pop to slower ballads.
