Myrla Lopes was born in 1930 in Salvador, Brazil, where she grew up hearing the Afro-Brazilian rhythms of her neighborhood. She started performing locally as a young woman. Her debut album 'Doce Vita' came out in 1961, and the song 'Aviva' from that record became a national hit in Brazil.

She kept recording through that period, putting out albums like 'Myria' in 1964 and 'Samba da Minha Terra' the following year. Her band was called Trio da Bossa.
