Nada Surf

Nada Surf formed in 1992 around singer-guitarist Matthew Caws and drummer Ira Elliot, who met as teenagers in the New York suburbs. Their debut album 'High/Low' came out in 1996 on Elektra Records, and its single 'Popular' became a breakout hit for the band. They've kept a steady lineup with Caws, Elliot, and bassist Daniel Lorca through most of their career.

Their songs often work with themes of love and loss, delivered through Caws's plainspoken lyrics and the band's melodic guitar arrangements. Tracks like 'The Way You Wear Your Head' and 'Weightless' show their knack for wrapping everyday observations in straightforward, memorable tunes. They've put out albums fairly regularly, from 'Let Go' in 2002 to 'Never Not Together' in 2020.

In 2002 they covered The Cars' 'Just What I Needed,' drawing some criticism for sticking too close to the original. That aside, they've mostly avoided drama, quietly building a catalog that appeals to listeners who favor thoughtful songwriting over flash.
