Nando da Viola is a Brazilian singer and composer from São Paulo, born in 1957. His father played guitar and introduced him to Brazilian folk music early on. As a teenager, he listened to violeiros like Tião Carreiro, Renato Teixeira, and Raul Torres.
He started performing in São Paulo bars and clubs in the 1980s, and put out his first album, simply called 'Nando da Viola,' in 1985. That record established his voice and his playing on the viola caipira, a traditional folk instrument. He's kept releasing albums since, including 'Viradouro de Alma Lavada' in 2012.
That song, 'Viradouro de Alma Lavada,' is one of his better-known pieces. It's a ballad from that 2012 album. Some listeners have felt his approach to tradition is too modern, but he's generally stuck with his own take on the style.
