Archive material and source history
Nando de Andrade was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1946. His father played viola, and Nando started writing songs as a teenager. In the late 1960s, he formed a band called Naturais, and they put out a self-titled album in 1969.
His second album came out in 1972, and that's when 'Apague a Luz da Minha Mesa' caught on. The song became his best-known work, along with 'Te Ver e Nao Ter.' During the 1970s, his lyrics sometimes ran into trouble with Brazil's military government.
